Use These Tips to Winterize Your Home
Winters can be rough, particularly for those who are in the Northern Hemisphere. Fortunately, while you can’t really do anything to make the cold months milder, you can take some steps to prepare your house for the winter season so that you’ll stay warm and comfortable. Start by inspecting your furnace and testing if it’s working as designed. If it’s starting to malfunction, have it repaired ASAP, or consider doing furnace installation and replacement if the unit is no longer fixable.
Aside from checking your furnace, you should also do the following:
Clean the gutters
Ice dams can form in gutters that aren’t ready for winter, and they can put your roof, underlayment, and gutters at risk for serious damage and even injure you or your loved ones if they break off and fall.
To prevent ice dams from forming, clean your gutters before winter rolls around and install gutter guards to prevent them from getting clogged. You must also ensure that your attic is at least ten degrees warmer than the environment so that it can help prevent ice from accumulating on your roof and gutters.
Seal cracks around doors, windows, and more
Even the smallest crack will allow drafts to enter your home and cause your heating system to work harder than normal. Because of this, you’ll want to spend a weekend or two inspecting your entire house and sealing all the cracks and gaps you might find.
Install weatherstripping around around your doors and windows and apply caulk on any openings around your air-conditioning units and mail chutes.
Follow these tips to winterize your home and keep it warm and comfortable throughout the cold months.
